Armed Robber Caught by Off Duty Detective

Palatka – On Wednesday night (7/15/2010) an off-duty Putnam County Drug/Vice Unit Detective prevented the escape of an armed robbery suspect.
At approximately 10:35 pm, the detective was at the gas station located in front of Walmart. He heard a female screaming in the Walmart parking lot and a black male running away from her on foot. The detective responded to the female and determined that the male subject displayed a handgun and robbed her of her purse. The detective pursued the individual on foot, eventually detaining him in the Winn Dixie parking lot. The individual was identified as Willie John Pitts.
Due to the incident taking place within the Palatka city limits, officers with the Palatka Police Department responded and took over the investigation. The victim’s purse and a handgun (which was previously reported stolen to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office) were recovered.
This is a Palatka Police Department case. The name of the detective is not being released do to his assignment as an undercover detective.
