School Crossing Guard

JOB TITLE: PART-TIME SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD

DEPARTMENT: DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION

RANK: CIVILIAN

SALARY: $20.00 a DAY

Crossings are generally 30-45 minutes in the morning and 30-45 minutes in the afternoon.

APPLICATION: Applicants shall complete an employment application  and submit it to the Sheriff’s Office.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The part-time school crossing guard will work in place of the full time crossing guard as needed. The person in this position is responsible for the safety of school-age children, while they are crossing the street in designated cross-walks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma from an accredited school.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Applicants must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, CVSA, physical and drug screening.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

School Crossing Guards work in the field with close personal contact with the public and children. They are regularly exposed to inclement weather such as extreme heat, extreme cold, and rain.

ABILITIES:

This position may be restricted to standing for long periods of time and has to have the heightened awareness to surroundings and be cognizant of the location of all children in the immediate area and follow established safety precautions inn avoidance of injury or accidents. This position frequently performs such tasks as using hand gestures to direct motorists and pedestrians. Must be able to lift and carry items up to 10 lbs. Communicates effectively with agency personnel, various governmental agencies, and the public. Effective communication skills are very important.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Stopping traffic flow with sign/hand signals.
  • Directing and/or escorting pedestrians across the street.
  • Resume traffic flow with sign/hand signals.
  • Counsel pedestrians on proper procedures when crossing the roadway or utilizing traffic control devices.
  • Report offenders (pedestrians or drivers) to the supervisor.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
